The question “What is Solar Energy?” is a good one.
The sun’s power is nothing more or less than our past, present and future. There would be no one reading or writing this without the sun.
The Sun. The center of this solar system. On average 150 million kilometers (93 million miles) distance from earth.
The sun is the center of ancient mythologies. The Egyptians worshipped her and called her “Ra”. We are awake when the sun shines and call it day and go to bed when s/he sets.
The sun is needed by nearly all biology on this planet to sustain us, also by humans (ie. Vitamin D production). The light needs about 8 mins to travel from the sun to our eyes. And more importantly, all our fossil fuels were created by the sun (except for nuclear fuels – at least not directly). But we need much more energy on this planet than just to grow trees today.
We need energy to sustain our civilization with perhaps 15 billion (now about 7 billion) inhabitants in the near future.
Fact about Thomas Edison and Solar Energy
So can we use this energy for our civilization as electricity? Yes, we can. Click here if you want to learn more about Solar energy to electricity
Thomas Alva Edison said about Solar Energy:
“We are like tenant farmers chopping down the fence around our house for fuel when we should be using Natures inexhaustible sources of energy – sun, wind and tide. … I’d put my money on the sun and solar energy. What a source of power! I hope we don’t have to wait until oil and coal run out before we tackle that.”
Solar Energy Advantages and Disadvantages
So the question is: What are the Advantages and also Disadvantages of Solar Power?
It is hard to see any disadvantages to Solar Energy. It is abundant, and it is free.
Well, though that is absolutely true, our state of technology has some problems, causing disadvantages.Momentarily, that is. See, it seems that Solar Energy Technology was never really pushed, as ie. oil was. So we are starting at a pretty low level. Though the idea and first research is actually much older than oil refining.
How is Solar Energy used?
Solar Energy can be employed directly, or
and it can be used indirectly by converting it:
